Saving smartly on your wooden garden building: a practical guide
A wooden garden building is an investment that lasts for years, but the total cost can vary greatly depending on the choices you make. On this page, Bear Wood brings together concrete, evergreen tips to keep the budget for your garden building under control – without compromising on quality, durability or finish.
Whether you choose a compact outbuilding, a spacious garden room or a multi-purpose timber garage, the principles below apply to every project.
1. Self-assembly versus installed delivery
Labour is often one of the biggest items on the final invoice. By having your garden building delivered as a kit and assembling it yourself (or with family and friends), you save the entire installation cost.
- ✔ Self-build kit: cheaper, longer build time, requires practical skills and the right tools.
- ✔ Installed delivery: quicker completion, no worries about foundations, levelling or sealing.
- ✔ In-between solution: you have only the shell installed and complete the interior and exterior finish yourself.
You can read more about the installation service on our installation page.
2. Choose a wood species that matches your maintenance ambitions
The right species determines not only the purchase price but also your long-term costs. Slightly more expensive wood that needs hardly any maintenance can work out cheaper over 20 years than a budget choice that has to be treated every two years.
- ✔ Douglas fir & larch: excellent value for money, naturally weather-resistant, weathers beautifully to grey without compulsory varnish.
- ✔ Thermowood: higher purchase price, very stable and hardly any maintenance over 25+ years.
- ✔ Treated spruce: the most affordable option, suitable for dry locations and outbuildings with lighter use.
Ask for a sample in advance or visit our showroom: the difference in texture and structure is often decisive.
3. Insulate well from day one
A garden building you want to use as an office, hobby room or extra guest room needs solid insulation. Insulating afterwards is always more expensive than insulating properly straight away – sometimes up to three times as expensive if you have to open up walls and roof again.
- ✔ Provide at least 80 mm of insulation in the roof and walls for three-season use.
- ✔ Choose a closed vapour barrier on the warm side to prevent condensation damage.
- ✔ Combine insulation with well-ventilated details around windows and doors.
A properly insulated wooden garden building pays for itself in the long term through lower heating costs and a longer service life for the timber structure.
4. Choose the right time to order
Demand for garden buildings peaks between March and July. If you order in autumn or winter, you often find a less busy schedule, faster delivery times and are ready for the new garden season.
- ✔ Ordering between October and February: more room in the installation schedule, more stable material prices.
- ✔ Request several quotes and compare them on identical specifications (species, wall thickness, foundation, glazing).
- ✔ Don’t be tempted by a low entry price without a clear list of options – an honest quote is always detailed.
5. Pay attention to tax and VAT
For garden buildings and outbuildings, the standard VAT rate of 21% applies in many cases. In specific situations – such as work on a main residence more than 10 years old carried out by a registered contractor – the reduced rate of 6% may apply. The exact conditions are set by the Belgian FPS Finance and may change.
Always get correct information from your contractor or accountant before placing your order. We supply the documentation you need to support your application.
6. Planning maintenance saves money years later
Every wooden garden building is alive. Small actions at the right time prevent major costs later:
- ✔ Check the roofing annually for damage and accumulated leaves.
- ✔ Re-treat or re-oil cladding every 2 to 5 years (depending on species and orientation).
- ✔ Keep the base free of moisture: good drainage around the garden building is crucial.
A well-maintained garden building lasts 25 to 40 years. Poor maintenance can more than halve that service life.
In summary: saving smartly on your wooden garden building
- ✔ Weigh self-build against installed delivery realistically.
- ✔ Choose a species that matches your maintenance budget.
- ✔ Insulate properly straight away – doing it later is always more expensive.
- ✔ Order outside the high season for more calm and choice.
- ✔ Get information about VAT and documentation in advance.
- ✔ Maintain the wood: it extends your investment considerably.
